Selected for the Global South Future-Oriented Co-Creation Project Grant

Cool Innovation (Headquarters: Tokyo) has been selected for the Global South Future-Oriented Co-Creation Project Grant under the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry’s 2024 Supplementary Budget (Second Public Offering for Overseas Infrastructure Expansion by Japanese Companies). This project will establish freshness-preserving cold storage facilities powered by off-grid electricity in rural Kenya, contributing to reducing agricultural waste and improving the income of small-scale farmers.

Kenya’s Agriculture and Economy

Kenya is an agriculture-driven nation, with tea, coffee, and horticultural products being the main agricultural exports. The agricultural sector accounts for approximately 34.1% of the country’s GDP. In 2013, agriculture contributed 25% of GDP, 65% of total exports, and 18% of formal employment, making it a key pillar of Kenya’s economy.

Project Overview

This project will integrate Cool Innovation’s freshness-preserving cold storage technology with Sustainergy’s off-grid power generation solutions to ensure stable agricultural storage even in areas with weak electricity infrastructure. By doing so, we aim to eliminate agricultural waste losses, optimize transportation and sales, and enhance farmer incomes and regional economic development.
